This Week's Topic: What would your ideal writing desk look like? Right down to the perfect pen or laptop.
It wasn't enough for me to leave this at writing desk. No, I've had it in my head what I'd like my entire working office to look like for far too long for that.
If you came into my home, you'd find a good deal of classic furniture: Cherry four poster bed and bookcase, vintage-washed black dining set, an old trunk - like the sort of thing that came off an old steamer ship - instead of a coffee table, a globe made of semi-precious stones in the corner.
But I've always wanted an office space with a completely different look. One whose design didn't take up too much space in my head. Something very clean, minimalist, anti-clutter. Lots of white, some black, a splash of color.
I remember watching Stranger Than Fiction and coveting Emma Thompson's writing space. I mean, I didn't like the desk itself, and I hated the floor. And the walls. But that's not the point. The point is: there was so much light, so much openness, room to climb up on one's desk to think! That's what I wanted.
Just . . . not so ugly.
My ideal space looks more like this:
With this across the back wall - filled with books and manuscripts, of course:
And a bit of red in the corner. Perhaps a sofa:
But maybe a chaise lounge. One with a quirky sense of style:
On my desk itself? Not much. A lamp. My laptop. A black cup for pens and pencils. My black and white composition books. A garbage can under the desk to collect all my recyclables. And black and white prints of my favorite cities on the walls:
That's . . . about it. What about you? What's your ideal writing space? Head over to YA Highway to see what the other highwaywomen designed and to add your own links.

Oooh, j'adore. It's like a futuristic writing module. Awesome!
I definitely would want a ginormous bookshelf like that too. The whole thing looks so cozy and awesome :)
hehe yeah, we really are seeking opposites! I do get the appeal of a sleek, simplified space. unfortunately, I'm a very messy girl and I need more places to hide my insanity.
I envy that you can do minimalist. My brain can't handle that.
You should check out the "Handmade Spaces" thread on Modish.com. There are some creative spaces there that I would DIE FOR.
If I had all the money in the world, I'd paint turquoise walls, line them with pumpkin-colored bookshelves, and fill the bookshelves to the brim. I'd put pumpkin accents all around (like a Keep Calm, Carry On Poster and some pumpkin-toile window treatments). I'd get an overstuffed chair and ottoman (where I'd sit and do my edits), and I'd have a giant desk, with room for my MacBook AND a gorgeously HUGE Mac desktop (um, cinema screen? yes please!).
The color scheme would resemble this:

Okay, coveting that shelving! And love the splash of red idea in an otherwise light-and-bright room.
I always found the desk in "Stranger Than Fiction" rather funny, considering her personality. She kills people off in every novel, but she has a desk with curlies on the legs? HAHA!
I really love the shelving, too. And that chaise lounge? *swoon*
I love that movie, and I LOVE THAT CHAISE LOUNGE!!!
White walls makes me think padded walls. Which is so, so appropriate for a writer's workspace.
